My dad actually sent an email saying "i bought tickets for april, will that work?" He found some cheap tickets...
It was the first time we'd spent a bunch of time together, car time - that is, and it was pretty interesting. We visited Seaside, outside Monteray, where I was born in Fort Ord. Dad was part of the foreign language school when mom had me, and we left just months later; I've never been back to CA till Alli started school here.
Dad was actually learning Czech for the cold war in Europe. When I found out he was a spy, a few years ago during my visit to his home in DC, I had just got back from the new Spy-Museum. There I learned that Washington is home to more spys than any other city in the world, and I wondered if Dad still was a spy, being in DC and having changed "jobs" like 10 times since he lived there... yes, I do read a lot of sci-fi, thanks.
Since dad is good at languages, I've always felt I was decent at accents. But I hardly remember the actual words once I'm out of practice for, hmm, like 1 month. Now Alli and I have decided to take French the monday after she graduates from Fuller! It's beginning French, and I'm kind of excited about learning somethings besides biblical Greek (Minor in college - when I thought I was making lifelong investments) and Twi (Ghanaian Language, which I hardly ever new more than 100 words).
Dad also renewed my desire to be health, which might be enhanced this week by the craziest "diet" you've ever heard about - "the master cleanse" (aka: Lemonade Diet). We drink nothing but water mixed with lemons, real mayple syrup, and a dash of cyan pepper... for 10 DAYS. Yeah, that's right, we are crazy. It happens often in California (as is obvious to outsiders). It's a detox that I've been meaning to try for over a year, and after a friend recently had a good experience (was on day 21!), we decided to give it a go. I'll let you know how it goes.
Dad, by the way, was in better shape than me when he was my age, but was told (the family wonders) by a mysterious healer named 'the army' that drinking would enhance his appearance. Later he learned that it didn't work, so he tried drinking more, and since that didn't work, he enhanced his diet by purchasing alcohol at Whole Foods (the CEO probably put that in a blog somewhere). Anyway, he's stopped all that (the alcohol), and it should teach us younger-uns that you've gotta eat well!
My youngest sibling, Jennifer, is coming next month.. we're stoked about all visitors.
Thanks, Dad, for coming! We love you.
